Description
Crassula ovata has thick, glossy, coin-shaped leaves on branches that thicken and gnarl with age like a little tree — old jade plants genuinely start to look like bonsai. They are famously associated with good luck, and we are not going to argue with that.
Give it plenty of sun and this plant will reward you with dense, compact growth for years; some of the jade plants tucked into Portland windowsills are older than the people watering them. It is patient, tolerant, and easy to propagate from a single dropped leaf.
Care
- Direct sun for several hours a day keeps growth compact and sturdy
- Water thoroughly, then let the soil dry out completely before the next watering
- Tolerates dry indoor air without complaint
- Mildly toxic to pets — keep leaves out of reach of chewers
