Fernseed opened in 2019 in a narrow storefront on SE Hawthorne Boulevard, a few doors down from a used bookstore and directly across the street from what was, at the time, a fairly mediocre burrito place. It’s a slightly better burrito place now. We’re still here too.
The shop is owned and run by Marisol Vega, who spent the decade before Fernseed working as a landscape horticulturist, mostly designing and maintaining outdoor gardens for clients around the Portland metro area. She started Fernseed after noticing the same conversation happening over and over with clients: they loved having plants outside but were convinced they were incapable of keeping anything alive indoors. Fernseed exists to argue, gently and with a lot of specific advice, that this usually isn’t true.
What we actually believe
We are not interested in moving plants as fast as possible. Nearly everything we sell is slow-grown — raised over a full, unhurried growing cycle rather than pushed to sellable size with heavy fertilizer and forced light. We source almost entirely from small Pacific Northwest growers, including our primary greenhouse partner out in Boring, Oregon, rather than from the large-scale import operations sometimes called plant mills that treat a Monstera the same way a warehouse treats a pallet of anything else.
In practice, this means our selection changes with what our growers actually have ready, our prices reflect plants that were given the time they needed, and our staff can answer real questions about where a plant came from and how it was raised, not just what it costs.

We’re a small storefront, and we like it that way — it’s easier to actually talk with people about their specific plants and their specific windowsills when the shop isn’t the size of a warehouse.
