Description
Epipremnum aureum, better known as golden pothos, is the plant we hand to first-time plant owners and never worry about again. Its heart-shaped leaves, splashed with yellow-green variegation, trail happily off a shelf or climb a trellis if you point it in that direction.
It tolerates low light, irregular watering, and the kind of benign neglect that kills other things, which is exactly why it has been a houseplant staple for decades. Cut a length of vine, root it in water, and you have got a second plant for free.
Care
- Handles low light well, though variegation is brighter with more indirect sun
- Water when the soil feels dry a couple inches down
- Not fussy about humidity — average room conditions are fine
- Keep away from pets and curious toddlers; it is toxic if chewed
