Description
Platycerium bifurcatum is grown mounted on a piece of wood rather than potted in soil, the way it would grow wild on a tree trunk. Its antler-shaped fronds fan out in a way that reads more like living sculpture than houseplant.
Each one we mount by hand, wiring a pad of sphagnum moss behind the basal fronds so the roots have something to hold onto. Hang it on a wall and it becomes a genuine conversation piece — people always ask where it came from.
Care
- Bright, indirect light; an east-facing wall works well
- Soak the whole mount in water weekly rather than watering from above
- Enjoys humidity — a kitchen or bathroom wall is a good home
- Pet friendly, though we would still keep it up out of paw’s reach
