Description
Nephrolepis exaltata is the fluffy, arching fern you picture when someone says “front porch plant” — and for good reason, it has been a staple of shady porches and parlors for well over a century. Ours grow into full, cascading mounds that look great in a hanging basket.
Portland’s damp, mild climate is honestly pretty close to what a Boston fern wants outdoors in the summer, though it is just as happy as a houseplant if you keep the humidity up. It sheds a bit of frond litter as it grows — consider that the cost of admission.
Care
- Medium, indirect light; avoid direct sun, which scorches the fronds
- Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged
- Loves humidity — a bathroom or kitchen window is often ideal
- Pet friendly, a solid choice for homes with cats and dogs

Lush and full. Lost some fronds adjusting to my dry apartment until I started the pebble tray they recommend. Now it is fine.
